Beloved mother and grandmother, Norma Riffe Ballard passed away Friday June 28, 2013 at Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg, VA. Norma "Tutu" Ballard was born in Lindside, WV on September 29, 1921 she was a daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Virgie McGhee Riffe.
She grew up in an era when ladies wore gloves to town and maintained a lifelong love of style and travel. Norma wed Clarence Arthur "Buddy" Ballard on October 18, 1944. While Buddy was in the Navy, Norma answered her own call to duty by working as a tank welder during World War II. Following the war, the happy couple moved to Sharon, PA. there Norma worked at The Sharon Store, where she was a representative for many popular cosmetic companies including Estee Lauder. After retirement and the birth of her first granddaughter Norma returned to West Virginia where she enjoyed working at Nelson's Ladies Shop in Princeton, WV. She was a member of the Lindside United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents and husband Norma was preceded in death by an infant daughter Norma Jane Ballard, one sister DeLois Lang and four brothers Bill, Richard, John and Carroll Riffe.
Norma is survived by her daughter Gayle and husband Dickie Allen of Lindside, WV two granddaughters Angela M. Allen Esq. and her husband Charles Fretterd of Raleigh, NC and Tiffany and her husband Kyle Ward of Durham, NC, two sisters Susie Riffe of Greenville, PA and Betty and husband Dick Moore of Hermitage, PA, one brother Clifford "Shorty" Riffe and wife Selva of Transfer, PA numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday July 1, 2013 at 1:00 PM at the Lindside United Methodist Church with Rev. Brent Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Peterstown Cemetery in Giles County, VA. Charles Fretterd, Kyle Ward, Bill Utterback, Todd Mann, Robert "Bob" Wickline, and Steve Atwill will serve as pallbearers, Jack Harvey and Jimmie Allen will serve as honorary pallbearers.
